The idea that an African-American could be elected U.S. president was unthinkable just a few years ago. Slavery had promoted the notion that blacks were somehow not completely human. This attitude continued for over 100 years with segregation and wide-spread prejudice. The Civil Rights movement won hard-fought battles to ensure that everyone is considered human and under the protection of the Constitution.
Although, we still have pockets of hard-core racism, President Obama was elected by a wide margin of votes.
