or a long time, Russia's space program suffered from a lack of money. They stopped training new cosmonauts after 1997. Scientific missions were limited. The program focused mainly on launching communication satellites. Russia destroyed its Mir Space Station in 2001. Mir was getting too old. Without Mir, Russia's only space project was its participation in the International Space Station. Finally, in 2003, Russia's space program received the additional funding it needed. In honor of Valentina Tereshkova, Russia's first woman in space, nine new trainees were presented for the space program. They trained for two years.
