What does it mean when war promotes ideology?

Religion, systems of govenment, beliefs are ideologies. Wars are fought constantly to promote a specific belief system. "Mine is better than yours". Therefore everyone should believe in mine. When a war is being fought, and people are dying, then others become "passionate" about that believe because they are angry at the deaths, regardless of whether they understand the belief system or not.
