Oil floats on the surface of water but mercury sinks. Explain why.

Water has a density of 1.0 g/mL. Oil floats because its density is <1 g/mL (about 0.80 g/mL) while mercury sinks because its density is > 1 g/mL@ 13.6 g/mL
