Two brothers were given the same amount of money by their mother.
After Tom had spent $12, and Terry had spent $4, Terry was left with twice the amount of money that Tom had. How much money was each boy given at first?

Let mother gave them - $x
After Tom spent $12, money he has = $(x - 12)
After Terry spent $4, he has - $(x - 4)
Now, (x - 4) = 2(x - 12)
=> x - 4 = 2x - 24
=> x = 20
So, each boy was given $20
