mole fraction of pentane in what?
Assume you have 7.2 g grams pentane (C5H12 and molar mass 72) dissolved in 86.0 grams hexane (C6H14 and molar mass 86).
mols pentane = 7.2/72 = 0.1 mol
mols hexane = 86/86 = 1.0 mol
Total mols = 0.1 + 1.0 = 1.1
XC5H12 = mols C5H12/total mols = 0.1/1.1 = ?
XC6H14 = 1.0/1.1 = ?
Note that the total of the mole fractions will always add to 1.0
