What is the purpose of adding the concentrated phosphoric acid to the reaction mixture in the synthesis of aspirin

You want to keep everythihg in the acidified pronated state. Usually in this procedure the acetic acid can be reused to make acetic anhydride and that's the preferred material when making aspirin.
