a gallon contains 4 3/8 gallons of paint

This must be some kind of paint suppression.

I think you just want
4 3/8 - (1/2)(4 3/8)
= 35/8 - 35/16
= 35/16

1/2 (4 3/8) = 1/2 (4) + 1/2 (3/8) = 2 3/16
