suppose you know that 40% of a number is 60
Let the original number be x
.40x = 60
x = 60/.40 = 150
So the number was 150
check:
take 40% of 150
= 40/100 * 150 , (* means multiply)
= 2/5*150
= 300/5
= 60 , ok then!
so in effect just divide your given result by .40
(or whatever the given percent is,
note 40% = .40 , 35% = .35 etc)

n = your number
40% = 40 / 100 = 0.4
If you know 40% of a number you know 0.4 n
Mark 40% of your number with x
x = 40% n
x = 0.4 n
Divide bith sides by 0.4
x / 0.4 = n
2.5 x = n
n = 2.5 x
So, if you know 40% of a number multiply it by 2.5 and you get the required number.
40% = 40 / 100 = 0.4
If you know 40% of a number you know 0.4 n
Mark 40% of your number with x
x = 40% n
x = 0.4 n
Divide bith sides by 0.4
x / 0.4 = n
2.5 x = n
n = 2.5 x
So, if you know 40% of a number multiply it by 2.5 and you get the required number.
