A shop sells cookies in tins of two different sizes, big and small. The total number of cookies in a bit tin and a small tin is 54. The number of cookies in 2 small tins is 6 more than the number of cookies in a big tin. Find the number of cookies in a big tin.

2s = b+6
so b = 34

x+y = 54
y = 54-x
also y = 2x - 6
then
2x-6 = 54-x
3x = 60
x = 20
y = 2(20) - 6 = 36
small tin holds 20
big tin holds 36

cookies in 2 small cans = 40
big can holds 36, so 2 small cans hold 6 more than a large can
