I have a sneaking suspicion that you need some parentheses.

I'll guess you meant
(4r-4)/(r^2 + 5r-24) + 4/(r+8) = 3/(r-3)
(4r-4)/((r+8)(r-3)) + 4/(r+8) = 3/(r-3)
(4r-4 + 4(r-3))/((r+8)(r-3)) = 3(r+8)/((r+8)(r-3))
4r-4+4r-12 = 3r+24
8r-16 = 3r+24
5r = 40
r = 8
