But Madison (a slaveholder) rejected an idea that enslaved peoples as property be subject to duties, saying that the idea of “property in man” should not be written into the document. To what extent do you think that the Constitution enshrined slavery in the nation’s founding fabric? Or was the way it was included sow the seeds for its ultimate destruction?
