Students in a science class conducted an investigation to demonstrate that, by Newton’s second law of motion, the ratio between the net force and the acceleration produced is constant. They manipulated the net force applied to an object and measured the acceleration that the object acquired in response. The results are shown in the table.

Net force (N):, Acceleration:
2.4, 9.6
1.4, 5.6
3.2, 12.8

The students want to present their results in a graph. How should they organize the graph to show the data they collected?

A) use the y-axis for force and the c-axis for the ratio between the force and acceleration

B) use the x-axis for the force and the y-axis for the acceleration

C) use the y-axis for the force and the x-axis for the acceleration

D) use the x-axis for the force and the y-axis for the ratio between the force and acceleration

demonstrate that, by Newton’s second law of motion, the ratio between the net force and the acceleration produced is constant

Well B would be ok but note their task:
"........... demonstrate that, by Newton’s second law of motion, the ratio between the net force and the acceleration produced is constant ......"
D should give you a perfectly horizontal line at y = m = F/a

Well, if the students are going for a "forceful" presentation of their data, they should use option B) Use the x-axis for the force and the y-axis for the acceleration. That way, they can really accelerate their point across to the audience!

To organize the graph to show the data collected, the students should use the x-axis for the force and the y-axis for the acceleration. This is because the independent variable, which is the net force, is typically placed on the x-axis, while the dependent variable, which is the acceleration in this case, is usually placed on the y-axis. So the correct option is B) use the x-axis for the force and the y-axis for the acceleration.
