5(x-2)-x=2(x+5)-4
distribute the 5 and the 2
5x - 10 - x = 2x + 10 - 4
collect like terms
4x - 10 = 2x + 6
subtract 2x from both sides
4x - 2x - 10 = 2x - 2x + 6
simplify
2x - 10 = 6
add 10 to both sides
2x - 10 + 10 = 6 + 10
simplify
2x = 16
divide both sides by 2
x = 8 , all done
with practise you will be able to shorten this considerably to
5x - 10 - x = 2x + 10 - 4
4x - 10 = 2x + 6
2x = 16
x = 8
