    231n - 143n, where n is the base
---> 2n^2 + 3n + 1 - (n^2 + 4n + 3)
= n^2- n -2
in the same way, 44n ---> 4n + 4
n^2 - n - 2 = 4n + 4
n^2 - 5n - 6 = 0
(n - 6)(n + 1) = 0
n = 6 or n = -1
More likely you want n to be a positive base, so n = 6
although n = -1 would also work
