I cannot get my brain around questions like this:
1/4 divided by 2/5 = 2/4 x ?
I have 4 problems like this and even the example doesn't make sense - I may have copied it wrong off of the board.
Can anyone help?
Thank you!
You invert the second fraction and then just multiply.
1/4 divided by 2/5 = 1/4 multiplied by 5/2
What do you get?
??

OK - I GOT 10/8THS OR REDUCED I GET 1 1/4. IS THAT RIGHT?
NOW I JUST WANT TO LEARN WHY I INVERT THE 2ND FRACTION.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
There are really only two basic operations in arithmetic, addition and multiplication.
subtraction is just the inverse operation of addition.
e.g. 12 + 5=17
17 - 5 = 17 + (-5)=12
so to subtract we simply add the opposite
likewise, division is the inverse operation to multiplication
eg. 12 x 4 = 48
and 48 ÷ 4 = 12
but 48 x 1/4 = 12
take 1/4 of $48 and you would get $12
divide $48 by 4 and you would get $12

<b>How did you get 10/8?
1/4 divided by 2/5 = 1/4 multiplied by 5/2
When you multiply 1 x 5, you should get 5.
When you multiply 4 x 2, you should get 8.
5/8 is the answer.
