A semi-circle sits on top of a rectangle to form the figure below. Find its area and perimeter. Use for 3.14.

The rectangle is 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. The semi-circle sits on top of the rectangle on a side that is 4 inches long.

area = the rectangle + half the circle

= 3*4 + (1/2)Ï€(2^2)
= 12 + 2Ï€ in^2
= ...

perimeter, (I guess we are not counting the one length)
= 2+4+3+(1/2)2Ï€(2)
= 9 + 2Ï€ inches
= ...

semi circle

radius = 2
perimeter = 2 pi r/2 = pi r = pi * 2 in
area = (1/2) pi r^2 = (1/2) pi * 4 = pi * 2 in^2
rectangle
bottom = 4 in and 2 sides of 3 in each
perimeter = 4 + 2*3 = 10 in
area = 4*3 = 12 in^2
so
perimeter = 10 + 2 pi
area = 12 + 2 pi

go with Damon's perimeter,

I did not pick up my typo, had 2+4+3+(1/2)2Ï€(2)
instead of 3+4+3+(1/2)2Ï€(2)

To find the area and perimeter of the figure, we need to calculate the areas and perimeters of the rectangle and the semicircle, and then add them together.

1. Rectangle:
The area of a rectangle is calculated by multiplying its length and width. In this case, the length is 4 inches and the width is 3 inches.
Area of rectangle = length × width = 4 inches × 3 inches = 12 square inches.

The perimeter of a rectangle is calculated by adding all four sides. In this case, the length is 4 inches and the width is 3 inches.
Perimeter of rectangle = 2 × (length + width) = 2 × (4 inches + 3 inches) = 2 × 7 inches = 14 inches.

2. Semicircle:
The area of a semicircle is calculated by taking half the area of a full circle. The formula for the area of a circle is A = πr^2, where π (pi) is approximately 3.14 and r is the radius. In this case, the radius is half the side length of the rectangle, which is 2 inches.
Area of semicircle = (1/2) × π × r^2 = (1/2) × 3.14 × (2 inches)^2 = (1/2) × 3.14 × 4 square inches = 6.28 square inches.

To find the perimeter of the semicircle, we need to add the curved part of the semicircle and the straight side of 4 inches.
Perimeter of semicircle = π × diameter/2 + side = 3.14 × 4 inches/2 + 4 inches = 6.28 inches + 4 inches = 10.28 inches.

3. Finally, we add the areas and perimeters of the rectangle and the semicircle:
Total Area = Area of rectangle + Area of semicircle = 12 square inches + 6.28 square inches = 18.28 square inches.
Total Perimeter = Perimeter of rectangle + Perimeter of semicircle = 14 inches + 10.28 inches = 24.28 inches.

Therefore, the area of the figure is approximately 18.28 square inches and the perimeter is approximately 24.28 inches.
