What caused the pilgrims to settle in New England

2 answers

They had to get out of England due to their unusual religion.
They did not want to live in the Netherlands forever.
They had opportunity to go to North America ruled by England.
They figured it would be like Virginia up a little North and were allowed there by the English.
They went expecting to be farmers but did not really know how.
Luckily the natives could feed them and teach them to stick a fish in the ground for fertilizer.
Meanwhile while they starved and froze ashore, Europeans were doing great fishing in Massachusetts Bay and on Georges and Grand Banks for cod and halibut.
Eventually they learned how to fish and farm and to carve a wooden cod fish for the Massachusetts legislature chambers.
