area of one side = (1/2) (5)(8) = 20 cm^2
area of 4 sides = 80 cm^2
area of base = 25
base + sides = 80 + 25 = 105 cm^2

You didn't say to include the area of the square base,
so let's just find the sum of the surface areas of the 4 equal triangle
We will need the height of one such triangle, let it be h cm
h^2 + (5/2)^2 = 8^2
h^2 + 25/4 = 64
h^2 = 231/4
h = √231 /2
total area = 4(1/2)(5)(√231/2) = 5√231 = appr 76 cm^2

I doesn't show it there, so perhaps they added the area of the base which should be
a total of 76 + 25 or 101 cm^2
I don't see that either, so ?????

Go with Damon
I thought the slant height would be the edge of the pyramid.

Just looking at the choices.
One answer includes the area of the base,
another doesn't include it, but the wording does not say which way.
Poorly designed question.

Yes, it does not say if we should include the 25 cm^2 buried in the sand
