A function can only have one value of the dependent variable for each value of the independent variable.
Therefore if you have several values of art class for a each student, then art class is not a function of student.

Look, here is the definition of "function" in your words instead of mine:
"A function is a relation between two sets in which one element of the second set is assigned to each element of the first set."
Now if you have several art classes for each student, then MORE THAN one element of the second set is assigned to each student. - NOT ALLOWED
