I do not have your textbook but NC, particularly the outer banks, is mostly for fishing and trade. If you want to grow food or cotton or cows, wise to head west, at least until the land starts upward.

I am not sure about the temperature, but the wind and waves are difficult for farming, particularly on sand. (check the weather map right now)
