the additive identity is 0, because you can add 0 to any number and leave it unchanged.
a number's additive inverse is what you have to add to result in the additive identity: 0
x + (-x) = 0

Similarly, the multiplicative identity is 1, since you leave a number unchanged when you multiply it by 1.
Thus, a number's multiplicative inverse is its reciprocal, since x * 1/x = 1

Note that while every number has an additive inverse, zero does not have a multiplicative inverse.
