why not place the given numbers on a number line and see which lands farthest to the right?

1, draw a number line you can easily see
2,it should be |-5| instead of /5/, that | | is absolute value of a number, which makes all negative number to be positive, and positive number remain positive. Thus, turn -5 to be positive 5.
