start at (0 , 0)
go right to (12 , 0 )
go up to (12 , 5 )
draw it, right triangle, we want sum of perpendicular legs and then hypotenuse
12 + 5 for sum
sqrt ( 12^2 + 5^2 ) = sqrt (144+25) = sqrt (169) = 13
of course you knew that 5 , 12 , 13 was a right triangle anyway, right?
