In the diagram, EF is the median of trapezoid ABCD. If AB = 5x - 9, DC = x + 3, and EF = 2x + 2, what is the value of x?

well, since EF is the median, its length is the average of AB and CD. So,
2x+2 = (5x-9 + x+3)/2
2x+2 = 3x - 3
x = 5
check: yes, 12 = (16+8)/2
2x+2 = (5x-9 + x+3)/2
2x+2 = 3x - 3
x = 5
check: yes, 12 = (16+8)/2

the median is the average of the two bases
[(5x - 9) + (x + 3)] / 2 = 2x + 2
6x - 6 = 4x + 4
[(5x - 9) + (x + 3)] / 2 = 2x + 2
6x - 6 = 4x + 4
