No |-3| is = to 3

whenever you see a negative number like this for example |-5| it is going to be the opposite of that number so the number is really 5.If you see |5| just know that it is still just 5

All of this absolute value confusion can be resolved if you just recall the definition of the absolute value:
|x| = x if x >= 0
|x| = -x if x < 0
