Not sure if right but try this. Say .25=2x where .25 is the fraction of his allowance spent on books and 2x is the number of books multiplied by the price of the books. Solve for x. x=0.125

sounds right, but does not accurately reflect the situation.
Say 1/4 x = 2, where x is the number of books.
Now divide both sides by 2 and you get
1/2 * 1/4 x = 1
1/8 x = 1
so, 1 book is 1/8 of the total.

henry2,
(1/4)/2 = 1/4 * 1/2 = 1/8.
