actually it is not D
Let the original amount be x
after tax ----- 1.08x
then the tip ----- (1.2)(1.08x) = 54.32
x = 41.91

check:
tax = .08(41.91) = 3.35
total after tax = 45.27
tip = .2(45.27) = 9.05
total bill = 54.32

none of your given equations are satisfied by my correct answer.

esksjnjsd yes.....thanks again
Answered by Henry2,
cost = $X before tax and tip.
x + 0.08x + 0.2(x+0.08x) = 54.32.
1.08x + 0.216x = 54.32,
X = $41.91.
The answer is D.
