Hello,
An Aircraft carrier can travel 450km in the same time a container ship travels 300km. If the aircraft carrier was traveling 5km/h faster what was the speed of the container ship?
I don't need help answering the actual question, I have a pretty specific question...
d/v=d/v + 5km/h
450km/v = (300/v) + 5km/h
-300/v from both sides
150/v = 5km/h
150/5 = v
Here's my problem, I know that 150 is in km & 5 is in km/h, by process of elimination I know that 150/5 = t not v so what should I have done differently to not have that issue? In this case I figured out what was wrong but in another question I may not so I want to try to understand as best I can.
Thanks a ton! :)

the carrier's speed is 3/2 that of the container ship.
So, if the container ship's speed is x, then
3/2 x = x + 5
x = 10
As for your attempt, since time = distance/speed, you should have said
450/(x+5) = 300/x
again, x=10
Dividing by v both times was wrong, since the speeds are different
or, since distance = time * speed, let v be the slower speed. Then
t = 300/v
(v+5)t = 450
(v+5)(300/v) = 450
v = 10
