I'm guessing you are referring to The Cay. (If not, correct me.) He wanted people to understand that race doesn't matter and that all that should matter in a person is their personality. They don't have to be pretty on the outside, just pretty on the inside.

Cardinary -- please do not give answers. Many of these "students" have not read their assigned books. Giving them the answers does not increase their reading abilities, thus helps them become even more illiterate.
