Two six-sided dice are rolled. If the sum of the dots showing is odd, we get $16; otherwise, we lose $27. What is the expected value of this game?

p(even) = 1/2
p(odd) = 1/2
so
(1/2)16 - (1/2)27 = -(1/2)11 = -5.5
in other words the average of 16 and -27
