Ewan is building a maze for his pet rats out of 2x4s. He needs two pieces that are 2 ¾ feet long, one that is 3.5 feet long and two that are 1 5/8 feet long. Ewan can buy wood that is 84 inches long at $2.35 per board, 96 inches long that costs $3.60 for each board, or a 10 foot board, for $4.61.

what's confusing? Just don't get lost in the maze of words!
He needs two pieces that are 2 ¾ feet long: 2*(2 3/4) = 5 1/2
one that is 3.5 feet long: 3 1/2
two that are 1 5/8 feet long: 2*(1 5/8) = 3 1/4
so, total wood is 5 1/2 + 3 1/2 + 3 1/4 = 12 1/4 feet = 147 inches
Ewan can buy wood that is 84 inches long at $2.35 per board, 96 inches long that costs $3.60 for each board, or a 10 foot board, for $4.61.
He needs (in inches) 33+33+42+19.5+19.5
Now split that up into various combinations of boards so he gets the lengths he needs.
