Solve. 12 ÷ 4( 9 ÷ 3) x 9

=12/ 4(3) x 9
= 12/12 (9)
= 1

The answer sheet had 81. Is this correct?
12 ÷ 4( 9 ÷ 3) x 9
= 12/ 4(3) x 9
= 3(3) x 9
= 81?

2. 8 + 8 (18 ÷ 3)
= 8 + 8(6)
= 8 + 48
= 56
Isn't this similar to the 1st problem?

12 ÷ 4( 9 ÷ 3) x 9
12 ÷ 4x3 x 9
Now, multiplication and division are done left to right, so that gives
3x3x9
9x9
81
The spacing tries to trick you into grouping the operations in the wrong order.

#2 is quite different, since all the multiplications are done before any of the additions.
