It would help if you proofread your questions before you posted them.

Was the book/pen 3/8 of the remainder? If so:

Let x = allowance
B = 1/5x
P = 3/8(4/5x)

x - 1/5x - 3/8(4/5x) = 12

Solve for x, then B and P.
