                Sally has 1/3 as many stickers as Mary. Jane has 3/4 as many stickers as Sally. If the three girls have 114 stickers altogether, how much stickers does Jane have?

    Recall what I just said in the previous post?
This time I will reverse that idea to avoid fractions, start with the largest.
Also I noticed that the LCD for 1/3 and 3/4 is 12, so ....
let Mary's amount be 12x
then Sally has (1/3)(12x) or 4x
and Jane has (3/4)(4x) or 3x
12x + 4x + 3x = 114
19x = 114
x = 6
Mary has 72
Sally has 24
Jane has 18
or the traditional way:
Mary ---- x
Sally ----(1/3)x or x/3
Jane ----(3/4)(x/3) or x/4
x + x/3 + x/4 = 114
times 12
12x + 4x + 3x = 1368
19x = 1368
x = 72
notice I get the same answers
