Ethnic groups are similar because many are of the same ethnicity. According to a teacher/tutor, "Canada prides itself on being like a stew with each ethnic group contributing separate and identifiable cultures. The U.S. likes to consider itself a melting pot where all differences disappear." This means Canada likes to take the pride, and maybe even brag, or show-off, while US, likes to hide the details, and keep quiet.

Your first sentence is redundant. Ethnic groups are characterized by the fact the members are of similar ethnicity. It also makes no sense because ethnic groups are characterized by being (in some ways) dissimilar from each other. And I think you misinterpret the phrase "melting pot". The idea is that the various ethnic influences "melt" together creating a whole, complete with all those influences, not that the differences are ignored. A "stew" is different in that the individual ingredients remain distinct, but blend their flavors to create something different than the individual components by themselves. The concepts are similar, but not quite identical.
