A circle inside of a square, the circle has a radius of 2 in.

B. 9.7 sq in
C. 3.4 sq in
D. 8.3 sq in

I'm having a hard time solving these two, if you could be so kind as to walk me through it, please do.

first one:

you have a
rectangle + half a circle
= 5*8 + (1/2)Ï€ (4^2)
= ...
can you see why the radius of the semicircles is 1/2 of 8 ?

2nd:
area of circle = π(2^2) = appr 12.566 inches^2
You didn't say what the square is like, I will assume the circle touches the square on all sides, so your square is
4 by 4, for an area of 16 inches^2

I also don't know what is shaded in blue, but you got the two parts, so ....

Add the area of the rectangle which is length x height

And then add the area of the semi-circle.
