None of Van Gogh's self-portraits have a formal setting. Some have no "setting" at all. Your first choice was "abstract designs". Most of his self-portraits have just color as a background, setting. If that is considered abstract by your text and teacher, maybe you were right the first time. I think the brush strokes in creating those backgrounds and the image may be the key here. But, again, I have no way of knowing which of his self-portraits you are looking at.
