so i forgot how to get the variables on the same side in an equation such as
x = y + 1
can someone explain please?? thanks :)

an equation remains true if the same thing is done to both sides. So, to get rid of the y on the right, subtract it. But do the same thing on both sides, so you have

x = y+1
x-y = y+1-y
x-y = 1
