If you're designing something for several purposes, why is it important to focus only on one of these purposes?

May I suggest that any good graphic design has to have ONE focus that the viewer can grasp and understand on some level (emotional or intellectual) at a glance. The design may serve several purposes, such as building trust in a brand, eliciting sympathy for a cause, selling a product, any number of things), but the focus still has to be clear and simple, easy to grasp.
