the temperature at 6;00 am was - 20 and it was 8 degrees warmer than at midnight so if the temperature at 8:00 am was 12 degrees warmer than at midnight what was the temperature at midnight

at midnight it was -20 - 8 = -28
by the way at 8 am it was -28+12 = -16
by the way at 8 am it was -28+12 = -16

note that (1/2)(b1+b2) is the average width of the trapezoid
so you are really multiplying the height times the average width

hmmm, note that 8 = average width
5+11 = 16 and 16/2 = 8
I bet you just have
8*4 = 32
