Which would you use to say your friend is writing? estan escribiendo estoy escribiendo esta escribiendo estas escribiendo

If "your friend" replaces "he or she"
then it is "esta escribiendo"

is= current = esta
was= past = estuvo
=is going = estara

so since you're saying she IS=
writing = escribiendo
your friend ESTA escribiendo
