Although the Navy was weakened and a lot of people were killed, the attack itself did not change the lives of many Americans.

Growing up during the war, I remember food and gasoline rationing, savings bonds and 10 cent savings stamps, and gold and blue star flags in the windows of neighbors. We couldn't buy many hard durable goods. Many men went off to war and many women took jobs in factories.
