exactly backwards. If the first sentence had to include the "was" then it is a progressive tense: was helping.
Becca was {helped/<u>helping</u>} Corky with his homework last night.
Similarly, the second sentence is a simple past tense:
Blossom <u>watched</u> her best friend study for the test.
