Pretend you have 2 triangles that are similar.
Triangle 1 has sides that are 18 and 24.
Triangle 2 has sides that are x and 6.
What is the value of x?
-6
-8 <--- THIS ONE!
-30
-72
Because...
x/24 (X) 6/18
24 x 6 = 144
144 / 18 = 8
I'll give it a go.

Another simple way to look at it:
24 ----> 6 , so it was reduced by a factor of 1/4
what is (1/4) of 18 ????
