I taught (thinking to myself not sure if it’s the right word taught) to myself that I needed to be fluent in programming languages to set myself apart from others in the job market and increase my quantitative skills.

No. The correct word is "thought". The word "taught" means that you were teaching someone. Learn to use a dictionary. There are several excellent ones on line:
