A cheetah can run approximately 100 km/hr and a gazelle at 80.0 km/hr. If both animals are running at full speed, with the gazelle 70.0 m ahead, how long before the cheetah catches its prey?

time = t
distance in meters = 1,000*distance in km
distance covered by cheetah = d
distance covered by gazelle = d-70
d = 100,000 t
d-70 = 80,000 t
so
70 + 80,000 t = 100,000 t
20,000 t = 70
t = 7/2000 hours
in seconds (3600 s/h)
t in seconds = 7*3600/2000 = 12.6 seconds
distance in meters = 1,000*distance in km
distance covered by cheetah = d
distance covered by gazelle = d-70
d = 100,000 t
d-70 = 80,000 t
so
70 + 80,000 t = 100,000 t
20,000 t = 70
t = 7/2000 hours
in seconds (3600 s/h)
t in seconds = 7*3600/2000 = 12.6 seconds
