Umm I'm not familiar with this question... maybe that since 5% equals to 30 the reptiles and birds have 30 students each and the fish is just 2 times more percentage, so you would multiply 30 by 2 and get 60. 35% is multiplied by 7 to get 210, so there are 210 cats. For the dogs you would multiply 45% by 6 and get 270 students. You will add 30 + 30 + 60 + 210 + 270 = 600. Oh and btw I don't know how to get to the number 7 or 6 I just got help from @Yo Tengo.

Ms. Sue and Yo Tengo are right. yo tengo is going the hard way while ms.sue is making it simple.... 0.05x = 30 is jut 30 divided by 0.05 which equals to 600. 600 sixth graders are participating. I am being honest I got a 100% on this quiz! I just want to help :)

Great Anonymous, but how to get to 0.05 is that you make the 5% of birds into a decimal. So the answer all together is the percentage of birds converted to a decimal is 0.05 and if 30 students vote on the 5% of birds the you would have 0.05x =30. you would divide 30 by 0.05 and get 600. That is the final answer to the question. Oh and you're welcome. -_- ;)

I came here to check my answer and I got it right :) The way I did it was 30 x 20, if you are confused as to where I got the twenty from it is simple... 5% x 20 = 100%, so since in this case, 5% = 30, I did 30 x 20 and got 600 as my answer.

lol I knew the answer within 10 seconds by doing 30 x 2 = 60 then 60 x 10 = 600 but I didn’t know how they wanted us to do it

the way you figure it out is to do the percentages form smallest to largest
we know 5%=30
Reptiles 30
Birds 30
next percentage is 10% you will divide this the the percentage above (continue this step for rest of percentages)
Fish 10% ÷ 5% = 2
now you multiple that number by previous percentage amount you go which was 30
2 x 30 = 60 students
cats 35% ­÷ 10 = 3.5
3.5 x 60 = 210 students
Dogs 45% ÷ 35% = 1.28571428571
1.28571428571 x 210 = 270 students
now add each total number of students
270+210+60+30+30 = 600 students total surveyed
