what types of geographical features helped settlements grow and succeed? why?

Most of the settlements were either trade posts, or farm based.

Trade posts need to be on mountain passes or rivers because these were important trade routes.

Farms needed good rich "bottom" land, with a good rainfall in the growing season.

In both cases, geography that helped form defensive barriers was very helpful. Defensive barriers could be rivers.

I'm not so sure, but I really need the answer right for a social studies packet. I think it is mountains and rivers because that is where most settlements are close to.
