I'd decide on a "real-world problem" first and then find newspaper and/or news magazine articles that report and analyze it.

Be sure you check the reading level of whatever newspapers and/or news magazines you choose from. For example, I went to www.google.com and entered <b>reading level of nytimes</b> and learned it's considered grade 10 level.
